Santa's Here

Santa's Here!

With my white beard grown to a bushy 2.5 to 3 inches in length, a good number of our local young children are delighted to confirm that the real Father Christmas is to be found 3 or 4 days after Christmas, on holiday after all the exertions of the night of 24th/25th December, sitting in our local McDonald's eating a quarterpounder large meal and washing it all down with a diet coke. He wears my casual clothes as a disguise unlike the various incarnations of Father Christmas to be found on this years (2014) Christmas stamp issue from the Channel Island of Jersey.

Known  variously as Father Christmas, Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas, Kris Kringle, Sinterklas and Pere Noel, his birth is legendary with some historical and folklore connections. To confuse the unwary he is known at times to wear other than red fur-hemmed clothes and the stamp-sized police identikit images of the person in question show him in red, green and yellow (gold ) though he has been known to appear in purple, light blue, navy blue, white and even brown.

Commonly thought of as a jovial rotund character as seen in 1930's era Coca-Cola adverts, this description of him has earlier 19th Century origins in the poem "Twas the Night Before Christmas" as well as the cartoons of the political cartoonist Thomas Nast. Most of the year, so modern intelligence has us believe, he works hard at or near the North Pole, directing his army of Santa's Elves, preparing for his record breaking delivery of gifts on one night in December. Every year he breaks his world record for the number of deliveries to children - and adults - in 30 or so hours due to the rapidly increasing human birth rate. Surely he is a model of efficency and speed that the world's postal authorities should try to emulate.

I really like this set because of the design. It draws you to the center of the stamp where the jolly old man is. Just a really nice set I need to get.

Yes Anthony, well designed and beautiful. And the maximum face value is kept within reasonable bounds too, unlike the issue from Royal Mail.
