A Winter Wonderland

A Winter Wonderland.

One of my cherished photographs is of my firstborn daughter standing with red hands beside our huge snowman complete with his hat, scarf and carrot nose.

Over 30 years ago, I and my family were delighted with the story book of Raymond Briggs' Snowman and then later the animated film. It was lovely to see the snowman come to life and then fly off to his magical winter wonderland. Who could fail to be at least near a tear when the snowman succumbed finally to the thaw.

Now we have the renewed delights of the snowman brought to life after Billy makes a pile of snow and gives it character with hat, scarf coal and orange. There was even enough snow left over to build a snowdog. Together, boy snowman and snowdog wind their way at altitude over London to the north pole where the snow community compete in their annual Downhill race. Of course Billy and snowdog win.

These stamps, issued by the Isle of Man, show scenes and characters from the story, making us all “Dream of a White Christmas”. Is that Bing Crosby beginning to sing quietly in the distance – or is just my whimsical imagination? Designed by EJC Design, the stamps have been printed by Cartor by 4-colour offset lithography. The stamps measure 32.32x26mm with perf 13. Sold from sheets of 20 stamps the first day of issue was 23rd October 2014.    Snowman and Snowdog

The face value of issues in the UK is a problem for many collectors. I only  acquire one or two issues a year. Apart from Christmas they have to be really good for me to even look at them and consider buying them. In fact I have not looked at next years issue list and dates yet from Royal Mail and quite possibly will never bother to look at them. Even though I have a Royal Mail account number they don't even bother to send me publicity. Jersey, Guernsey and IOM send me publicity which usually goes quickly into the recycling bag after a brief look.

I think most people would love this set of stamps, whether they observe Christmas or not. Didnt realise a set of UK stamps now has such a high face value!
